"Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world."
- Dr. Maria Montessori
My Teaching Philosophy
As a future educator, I agree with Dr. Montessori and believe that it is the teacher’s responsibility to nurture students effectively so they can become leaders and attain their goals. In my opinion, successful education goes beyond academic achievement. The role of the teacher is to be able to see every student’s individual strengths and provide him or her with an academic, emotional, and social foundation to go about the world.
Nurturing Diversity
An effective teacher constructs a safe, inviting, and nurturing classroom that welcomes children from all types of backgrounds. These backgrounds may include diverse ethnicities, learning styles, gender identifications, socioeconomic statuses, and family situations. I believe that a successful teacher recognizes his/her students’ individual differences while also creating a cohesive classroom. As a result, it is my responsibility to ensure that each student feels comfortable enough to share these differences and fully participate in classroom activities. By integrating literature that portrays a variety of cultures, incorporating activities that address each of the five senses, and including various forms of academic assessment, I can adapt my teaching practices to fit the needs of each student.
Creating a Community
I must get to know both my students and their community. To be someone my students can trust and admire, I need to understand what life is like for them outside of school. Therefore, at the beginning and throughout the school year I plan to include activities that encourage my students to share what their family life is like, their academic and personal goals, and what helps them learn. This will enable me to learn about my students and create a supportive, respectful, and engaging learning environment. Furthermore, I must work effectively with other teachers to involve parents and community members in classroom activities. I believe that this will help students understand how what they are learning can be applied in the real world, while also developing intrinsic motivation.
My Goal
I believe that all children have the potential to learn and become leaders. However, only some teachers are able to cultivate children’s individual strengths and help them overcome their weaknesses. It is my goal to become this teacher for my students. By creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity, encouraging community and school partnerships, and incorporating a variety of teaching styles in my lesson plans, I believe I can be an effective educator.
