Children's Literature
Books have the ability to transport children to a different world, illuminate their senses, and comfort their concerns. In order to cultivate a student's love for reading, the teacher must emphasize and provide high quality books in his/her classroom.
What is "high-quality" literature?
All children need to feel accepted, welcomed, and valued in their classroom. A teacher needs to understand his/her students, especially their cultural background. High quality children’s literature must be adapted to the classroom in which the teacher is instructing.
1. The book's characters are relatable.
The child must be able to connect to the character on the basis of race, experience, or identity.
2. The book illuminates societal issues.
Books can serve as a way to launch a discussion about societal challenges and conflicts. These issues should provide students with a realistic representation of the world, and provide them hope that they can make a difference.
3. The book empowers students to take action.
The book's ending inspires students to make a difference in their local community. It is the teacher's responsibility to facilitate discussions and brainstorm solutions with students.
